The Yard Arm

The Yard Arm >> History

On the corner Citadel Road stands The Yard Arm.

A naval term, generally presented as one word, if refers to the end of a horizontally-positioned spar attached to a mast. From it flags are hung and in the old days so too were men that behaved badly.

The nautical theme here was adopted in name and layout when the pub underwent a major refit in the mid-1980s.

The new name replaced the earlier title Gipsy Moth IV a direct reference to one of the most significant sailing events to have touched Plymouth in the 20th Century - the solo circumnavigation of the world by Sir Francis Chichester, undertaken in his yacht Gipsy Moth IV. The end of the voyage, in May 1967, was witnessed by one of the largest crowds ever assembled on the Hoe and prompted the rechristening of this pub, which had formerly been known as the Hoe Park Hotel and also the old Crown and Anchor.
